Layout
- Posters are limited to a maximum width (or length) of 44" (91.5 cm). That is the width of our paper. The other dimension can be as large as you want, but PowerPoint will limit your poster to 56". Illustrator and other design software can be used for larger prints. Allow room for the printer margins! Don't place objects right to the edge of your layout.
- For the sake of legibility at a comfortable viewing distance, font sizes should not be less than 24 points for large posters. 28 or 30 points is a better size for text if you can afford the layout room.
- Allow large enough gutters between columns of text so that the columns are readable.
- Let us know if you need a higher-resolution logo. We have a number of logos on file and you should never use a logo from a website in a printed project. You can resize a logo smaller, but do not resize larger. You may want to download and save the high-resolution UIUC logo (2.19 MB) and Animal Sciences logo (22.5 KB) to use in your posters.
- We advise you to print out a $2.00 11"×17" proof to ensure that there are no errors as we will charge you if you want to make corrections or changes after the full-sized version is printed.
- Use TIFF, JPEG, or PNG format for images. Avoid saving JPEG files as a "baseline optimized" or "progressive" format. Use "baseline" JPEG format. Keep images at a minimum of 150 dpi up to a maximum of 300 dpi. Illinois TRAILL is not responsible for the image quality of your prints.
PowerPoint Dos and Don'ts
- Under the
Filemenu choosePage setup, thenCustom. Selectpage size. PowerPoint has a limitation of 56 inches. If you need a poster larger than that, you will need to set up yourpage setupat 1/2 size (30"×44" for two halves of the poster). The poster will then be doubled when printed. - Insert a text box rather than copying and pasting slides from another file.
- Avoid using preset pattern fills for graphs and other objects as they will not show up clearly.
- All graphs, charts, and formulae generated outside of PowerPoint will need to be ungrouped after insertion to prevent printing errors.
- All symbols must be inserted! After placing
your cursor in a textbox, go to the
Insertmenu, then chooseSymboland select the symbol you want to place in your file. If the symbols are not placed in your file through theInsertmenu, they may not print.
Note: PowerPoint was not developed as a print layout software package. It is important that the proper steps are taken to ensure your file will print successfully. Colors may not print the same color as appeared on your monitor. If you are concerned about color, we suggest that you use a print program such as Illustrator or InDesign.
