FAQs: New Computers

New Computers

I have a new computer. What do I do?

Do not plug it into the network without the latest security updates and virus protection. An unsecured computer can be discovered and taken over by a malicious person within a few minutes of being plugged in! We have the necessary software on CD-ROM so we can secure your computer before it gets on the network.

To get a computer connected to the network, you must submit a work request with the following information:

  • Owner name
  • Primary user name
  • Jack number
  • Room number
  • Account number

Finding your jack number: The ethernet jacks in most buildings are labelled with their number. If you are plugging your computer into a hub instead of directly into the wall jack, you will need to find the jack that the hub is connected to. Either way, you should end up with a number that looks roughly like HBP2-26.

Details on finding this information is also provided on the corresponding work request page.

Any new PC computer which is newly introduced to the departmental network will be on Active Directory, be up-to-date on critical operating system security patches and must have anti-virus software installed. To facilitate this IDTG will contact you with a time to drop your computer off at our office in 324 ASL.

New computers running Windows must be using a version designed for use in a networked environment; for instance, XP Professional is acceptable but XP Home is not. A flat rate of $100 per computer will be charged for the above services.
