FAQs: Active Directory

Active Directory

The UIUC Active Directory is a tool used to manage access to certain network resources on campus. AD allows campus administrators to give you access to services (authorize) and allows you to verify your identity (authenticate).

You will need to know your Active Directory username and password to access many services across campus, including Windows workstations, CITES NetFiles, Exchange accounts, restricted web sites, Engineering WorkStations (EWS), and some CITES EdTech instructional resources including Respondus, StudyMate, and Illinois Compass via WebDAV.

Knowing which username and password to enter can sometimes be confusing. Departmental and Windows-based resources often require your AD username and password, while secure University services generally need you to enter your NetID. For more information on where you will use your NetID, see the Your Network ID page.

Please visit the links below for assistance with your AD account.

This information and more can be found on CITES AD page.

Account Locked

If you have locked your Active Directory password because you entered the wrong password too many times, you can unlock it by doing one of the following:

  1. Wait 5 minutes for CITES to automatically unlock your account. OR,
  2. Go to AD Account Services
    1. Click on "Reset AD password, or unlock AD account (if you know your Network ID password)."
    2. Enter your NetID and NetID password.
    3. Check the box to the left of "Unlock Account." Ignore the Password and Confirm boxes.
    4. Click "Submit.

Logging Into Websites

Some of the online resources available to Animal Sciences faculty, staff, and students require you to log in using your Active Directory password. These sites will only be accessible in browsers that support this authentication system. At the moment, this means Firefox for Macintosh or Windows, Safari for Macintosh and Internet Explorer for Windows.

When you attempt to access a site secured using AD, you will get a dialog box like this for Firefox or Safari or Internet Explorer (bottom):

Firefox Login Dialog
IE Login Dialog

Just type in your login using the UIUC\netid format, where netid is your UIUC NetID, and use your Active Directory password, which you can set here.
